Popular “hair slayer,” Richelle Olson has big dreams and an even bigger heart. Creative and energetic, she is a beauty professional who shares her love of style with her motivation to impact the lives of others.
“I’m a stylist at Bird’s Barber Shop here in Austin, Tx, working at every location. I’m like a hair fairy and I live to put a smile on someone’s face. Cali-made and Texas raised, I recently moved here to Austin to pursue my dreams because I believe that God put me on this earth to make a positive impact in people’s lives,” she explains.
What made you want to be a cosmetologist?
I knew since I was a little girl that I would pursue my dream in the beauty industry. I knew how to do every braid possible by the time I was 6 from and old school book with picture instructions. I always wanted to look like Shania Twain, and I knew one day I would have a good chance to be her stylist!
What are your styling and makeup inspirations?
My hair and makeup inspirations are everyone from the Hunger Games crew. There were so many stylists with amazing work. They are all SO talented and creative. It’s overwhelmingly inspiring.
Along with Shania Twain, what other celebrities inspire you?
Kylie Jenner, Taylor Swift, Kat Von D, and Miley Cyrus.
What is the most interesting moment you have had as a beauty professional so far?
Every person I meet is interesting. Their story, joy in their eyes, pain in their voice. I read people like a book and fall in love with their stories, and I cherish every soul I encounter.
Of all of the beauty trends that are in right now, which one is your favorite?
The sexy messy look is my absolute favorite! Who doesn’t love natural with a little sexy in there to spice it up? But, you have endless opportunity with different style trends. It’s absolutely fabulous!
Just for fun, if you had to choose between dying your hair gray and purple or shaving one side, which would it be?
I would totally shave half my head and add some cool designs. I would adore the wild rebel look and love that it complimented all my ear jewelry.
What style do you NOT like very much?
I don’t like the rat tail some men have. It really does remind me of a rat.
What advice would you give to women when it comes to taking care of their hair and skin?
A women’s everyday vitamin is always a good idea for both. Your hair is the sexiest thing you could wear besides your smile! Do not wash your hair every day and always protect it with a leave in conditioner and heat protectant.
Never go to bed with makeup on and wash your face twice a day. Every time you wash your face, finish it off with some cold water (closes the pores). My secret is that I apply Biosil to my face at night.
What are your career goals in the industry?
My career goal is to be known as the “Hair Slayer” in the music and film industry. I will live the dream and be a freelance stylist in the business. I want to travel around the world and put a smile on my client’s face by making them feel and look astonishing.
What advice would you give others who want this career?
Follow your dreams! If you can believe it, you can receive it. Your passion will show through you and your work. Attract what you expect, become what you desire, reflect what you respect, and mirror what you admire.
